Local History Day

Yesterday I attended a Local History Day at Oxford Street Day Centre, Horseley Fields, Wolverhampton. The event was titled “Do You Know Your City?” and was hosted by the Neighbourhood Support Service. This was the last of a series of events aimed at older people to raise awareness of the help and support available to them.

Local Historian, Billy Howe displayed many images of Wolverhampton past and was able to share his local knowledge with people attending the event. I took a small display about the car and motorbike manufacturing industry in Wolverhampton featuring A. J. Stevens and Co., Star Engineering Company and Sunbeam.

The event seems to have been a success. I was able to give people information about the Archive and Local Studies service at Wolverhampton and answer some questions about our holdings and the type of information we might be able to supply. I spoke to a number of people who had visted the Archive previously but had not yet been to our new home at the Molineux Hotel building.

The people attending the event seemed to enjoy themselves with a variety of activities on offer. The old photographs and images of Wolverhampton provoked many memories and discussions about they way life used to be in the city.
