UK’s oldest Family Businesses

I came across an interesting link today on the Business Archives Scotland blog to an article about the UK’s oldest family businesses. As many of the businesses represented in the Smith, Son & Wilkie collection were family businesses I’m pleased to see that other records of old firms have survived.

Unfortunately, many of the businesses in the Smith, Son & Wilkie collection are no longer trading but thanks to their accountants, records of their existence have survived. It is nice to read an article highlighting the importance of business history and the interest it can generate.

Benjamin Walters & Co Ltd headed paper confirming the business was established 1767

So far, the oldest business we have found within the Smith, Son & Wilkie collection is Benjamin Walters & Co Ltd who were established as locksmiths in 1767 and continued to trade for over 200 years until they closed in 1968.
