Sandford Estate, Claverley

Recently, we have been working on the Wilkes papers, which require substantial conservation work and cleaning before they can be catalogued. We came across the Particulars with Plans and Views of the Sandford Estate, Claverley, which was being sold by the Trustees of the late Ellen Maria Wilkes by auction on Wednesday 25th August 1920.

Sandford Hall is described as “a commodious and well arranged Residence of most substantial and modern construction, healthily situated on red sandstone on an elevated position in the charming Village of Claverley commanding very beautiful views of the surrounding country”. The description goes on to describe each floor, room by room, to give a wonderful impression of the Hall.

Lot 2 included The Valuable Mixed Farm and Mill known as Powk Hall, which comprised of “a fine old Elizabethan Half-Timbered House, extensive Farm Buildings, Water Mill, 2 Cottages and land of approximately 112 acres.

The next few Lots mainly contain areas of land for sale including pasture and coppice. Lot 7 includes “the very Valuable and Desirable Claverley Farm, comprising a most convenient house, good buildings, 2 cottages and excellent land”. Lot 8 included a “convenient 2 story house and Butchers Shop” and Lot 9 included a “2 story house and Carpenter’s Shop”. Lot 19 contained a small holding known as “Pool House” at Heathton.

Also included in the sales material is a plan of the Lots for sale, giving details of the shape and location of plots and details of surrounding land owners.

This individual item in this collection has provided a great wealth of information about the Sandford Estate and would be of great interest to people researching the history of Claverley or people with relatives from the area as they may have been tenants or later owners of parts of the Estate.
