Side Welders Association

The Side Welders Association was founded on 24th June 1919 on the agreement that “The distribution of orders [would be] by weight, in accordance with an agreed scale of percentages of the total orders available”. The Association existed to promote the interests of their members, who were all manufacturers of chains, cables and anchors.  The Association used returns from 1917-1918 to make initial calculations on weights and prices. Their Registered Office was 22 Darlington Street, care of Smith, Son & Wilkie, who managed the administrative side of the Association and worked as Secretaries.

In 1920-1921 New Branches were formed:
a. Side Welded chains and cables
b. End Welded chains and cables (started 9 Nov 1920)
c. Stockless Anchors (started 19 Oct 1921)

The Association was in operation from 1919-1924 when clause 41 came into operation. Clause 41 regarded the renewal of the Association after 30th June 1924 and it was decided not to renew the Association.

The Association was reformed and began operating from 1 July 1926 funded by deposits from the members. By 1927 the circumstances had arisen where the initial deposits made by the member companies upon the reformation of the Association would be repaid. It was decided to hold the repayments until June 1931 when the Agreement of Association was renewed. The repayments were made when the Association was renewed for a further five years in 1931.

The Side Welders Association ceased operating in 1946 when all their investments were sold off and the income distributed between the member companies.
