Volunteer Role Outline

Title:  Volunteer Archive Project Assistant

Accountability: Kimberley Benoy (Cataloguing Archivist)

Hours: Flexible

Location: Wolverhampton Archives and Local Studies, Molineux Hotel Building

Project timescale: July 2011-December 2012

Purpose of the Project: The Taking Account of our Past project involves cataloguing the papers of Smith, Son and Wilkie, a chartered accountancy firm from Wolverhampton. This collection contains a wealth of records relating to local businesses and families over the last century.

Purpose of the Role: This project needs volunteers to help in a variety of roles. You could help sort, organise and repackage this large collection or use your local knowledge and conduct further research to help us understand the history of the businesses and families featured within this collection. You could work with specific records to produce an index or you could help to plan and create a display or exhibition.

You will be able to work behind the scenes at the archive and help to make this important local collection accessible. Full training will be given to support you in your role.


  • Undertake training to become competent in the role
  • To adhere to the Volunteer Agreement & Volunteer Policy
  • To comply with, and implement, the Wolverhampton City Council’s Equal Opportunities Policy and Procedures

Desirable Skills:

  • A willingness to learn about the archive and local businesses and families is essential
  • Good attention to detail and an appreciation of the delicate nature of archive material
  • Good communication skills
  • You will have an awareness of Health and Safety issues

  2. Thank you! The volunteer co-ordinator is away on holiday until the 8th August so we cannot officially start until he has been able to process the paperwork. I am happy to discuss roles and the type of work you might be interested in doing.

  3. On what days and for how many hours a day would you need the Volunteers ? Also what hours would you be working 9-5

    Also how many people do you need?

  4. Hi Glenn, the hours and days that volunteers can help with the project are flexible. I am generally at the archive between 9-5 most days but the volunteers undertaking research relevant to the project can come in any time the archive is open. We are looking for a range of volunteers to bring a variety of skills and knowledge to this project so we do not have a specific number in mind.
